Movie Monday: The Barkley Marathons

What's the hardest thing you've ever done in your life?

Now stop thinking what you did is that hard, you candyass.  You haven't experienced anything until you've done the Barkley Marathons.

Devised three decades ago and inspired by a prison break in which an inmate only covered eight miles across rugged Tennessee mountains in 55 hours, the Barkley Marathons is a race designed to make you suffer.

Over 100 miles.  60 hour time limit.  No aid stations.  No GPS.  Checkpoints consist of tearing pages from books strategically placed along the course.  The registration process is a secret, and while the start day is given, no one knows the start time until the race director blows a conch shell an hour beforehand.

In thirty years, only 14 runners have ever finished.

In 2012, a film crew captured the insanity that is the Barkley Marathons in a documentary, which is currently streaming on Netflix.  I made the mistake of turning it on the other night just before going to bed, expecting to only watch a few minutes of it.  Instead I stayed up way too late to finish it, and then I could barely sleep because I kept thinking about it all night.

The film, and the race itself, show just what people will do in the name of escaping boredom and doing something meaningful with their lives.  That of course means a lot of different things to a lot of different people, but to these unfortunate few, it means nearly killing themselves in the backwoods of Tennessee just to say they did it.

Here, for your viewing pleasure, is the 6 minute trailer for the film:

Now get out and do something painful, you candyass.

Movie Monday: Mind Games

This week's Movie Monday comes to you from Suze, who sent this video to me on Facebook.

How many of us have played mental games with ourselves before heading out on a run.  How many excuses to we find when the alarm goes off?  How long before we beat those excuses back and finally make it out the door?  How long do we let distractions like this Facebook and Twitter and this amazing blog and hell - videos like this - keep us from the run?

If you're like me, it could last hours.

Skip the pre-run games, says videographer Casey Neistat, and get into your run so you can get into the real mental games.

"I wonder if I'm faster than that taxi... I wonder if I can take a leak without getting arrested... How many times do my feet hit the ground in a minute?"

These are the thoughts that drive you through your run.  Let your mind wander or tune into the asphalt ahead.  Just get out there.

Movie Monday: she ran a marathon without talking about it

Here's a comedy group that took runners' penchant for oversharing (i.e. bragging about) their accomplishments on social media and made a mockumentary about the first person to run a marathon without telling anyone.

Isn't that the point of running?  So we can brag about it?

I'm only half joking.

I'd like to think I'm pretty good about leaving my Facebook friends alone when it comes to my running, considering only a fraction of them are runners.  That's partly why I started a Twitter account; so I could specifically connect with other runners and have a place to nerd out.

But you can bet the next time I set a PR, I'll do everything short of hiring a skywriter to announce my feat to the world.

Until then, enjoy this video:

Movie Monday: Would you still do it?

I ran my first half marathon in 2001 when the only way to brag about such an event was to write a mass e-mail to friends and family.  I ran my first marathon in 2005 during the age of MySpace, but still well before what we currently associate with the term "social media."

10 years later, I continue to run half marathons and marathons, yet I now tell everyone about it on Facebook, Twitter and this blog.  I have yet to get into Pinterest, Instagram, Snapchat, Periscope, or whatever else is out there, and I honestly hope I never do.

Which is why I love this commercial from running apparel company Pearl Izumi.  It asks the question, who do you run for?  Is it to impress countless faceless strangers on the internet, or is it for your own health and well-being?  If social media didn't exist, would you still do it?

Would you?

Movie Monday: Ginger Runner and the NYC Marathon

I love the Ginger Runner and I love his videos even more.  They're incredibly well-polished; the editing and sound are leaps and bounds above the average YouTube content, yet they never lose the amateur feel of just an average guy talking into a small camera.

I've posted one of his videos before; his running of the 2014 Gorge Waterfalls 50k.

In this particular video, he chronicles his journey to and subsequent running of the 2014 New York City Marathon, the one with nasty wind and temperatures throughout the day.  I love his sentiment as he approaches the finish: "Got my ass handed to me today, and loved every second of it.  Let's finish strong."

Enjoy!

Movie Monday: comparing running to other hobbies

If you're a runner and you participate in social media on any level, you've probably seen this video over the last week.  It perfectly captures the absurdity that is my chosen hobby and just how ridiculous and hardcore people treat it.

Enjoy!

Movie Monday: Deliverance meets running

A group of locals from Leiper's Fork, Tennessee decided to camp out on the side of the Franklin Half Marathon race course and good naturedly heckle the runners.  Taking their cue from Deliverance, they parked themselves by a rusty old pickup, wore overalls and played dueling banjos while calling out to passing runners.

"What are yew runnin' from, boy?"

Movie Monday: Shalane's 2015 Boston Marathon

Nice article from Competitor about Shalane Flanagan's third attempt at the Boston Marathon this spring:

She's once again aiming to win the entire thing, and it's exciting to see her try.  The Boston Marathon is her hometown race, and the desire to win is palpable.

It's refreshing and inspiring to see a professional athlete really put herself out there and leave her heart on the course.  While she came up short on two big goals in 2014 (winning Boston and claiming American marathon record in Berlin), it wasn't for lack of effort.  I sincerely hope this is her year to shine.

Movie Monday: The biomechanics of marathoning

Suze passed this along, and it's a fascinating look at Meb Keflezighi, Olympic silver medalist and New York and Boston Marathon champion, among other accolades.

Filmed by ESPN, the video concentrates on an elite runner's biomechanics and what it takes to not only run a marathon, but to run it well enough to win it.

I am by no means a science person, but I nevertheless found this video fascinating.  Enoy!

Movie Monday: 2014 NYC Marathon

Want to know what it's like to run the biggest marathon in the world?  Here's a great ground-eye view of the 2014 New York City Marathon shot from the middle of the pack:

2014 TCS NYC Marathon from Eric R on Vimeo.

I just found Eric Rayvid's blog "Dirty Old Sneakers" the other day by way of a race report he wrote on last year's Philadelphia Marathon.  He's based in New York City and offers a great perspective on the running (and cycling) scene up there.

And he just had a son too.

Go check him out here.

Movie Monday: Liz Miele

Last Saturday the runners at the Runner's World Half Festival were treated to a comedy set by New York comedian Liz Miele.  Not only is she a comedian, but she's a runner as well.

In this video, she parodies the "I'm a Runner" videos that Runner's World posts every month.

Movie Monday: Race the Tube

Here's a video in which a guy races the London Tube between stops in the ultimate man vs. machine throwdown.

1 minute 20 seconds to make it to the next stop.  380 meters, 2 ticket barriers and 75 steps.

Guess who wins.

Movie Monday: Beer Mile

In honor of my first beer mile the other day, here is a video of another beer mile.

Spoiler alert: he did considerably better than I did.

Movie Monday: Ginger Runner

In honor of my first 50k coming up this Sunday, here is an amazing video of a 50k over on the west coast:

Shot by a guy who calls himself the Ginger Runner, he carries a camera on a pole the entire race and ends up with some spectacular footage of the Pacific Northwest.  He also composes the music used in the video himself.

My favorite moment in the video is his reaction to one of the biggest waterfalls on the trail at 4:39.  He pauses to take in the beauty and the grandeur of the scene around him, then keeps on chugging though the race.

Movie Monday: Shalane Flanagan

One week away from the Boston Marathon.  Out of the countless videos I could have posted today, I am going with this one.  The Boston Marathon this year is about grieving, redemption, hope, resilience, and displaying our inner strength.  Let's never forget what happened at the race last year, and let's take time this year to reflect and honor those who were lost and injured.

But let's also remember that this is a race - one of the most intense races in the world.  And there is a hometown favorite who has a real chance at winning it all.

I am Team Flanagan all the way.

Movie Monday: Boston Marathon

The Boston Marathon is just two weeks away, and this year's edition seems to be the most important in the already storied marathon's history.

I'm sad I won't be able to join the masses in their tribute to last year's tragedy.  But I'll be there in spirit, eagerly awaiting my own turn come 2015.

In the meantime, here is a video about runners and what this year means to them.

Movie Monday: Run with us

This video popped up on Facebook last week; made by a friend of a friend in NYC about how everyone is turning into a runner these days.

Obviously no one involved in the project is a runner, or the line "bagels aren't good for you" wouldn't have been included.  Carbs tend to be much maligned in our culture, but amongst distance runners, well, not so much.

Movie Monday: Portland snow runners

In what could be a skit on Portlandia, two runners out for a run in a snow storm get interviewed by local news.  They wax poetic about the snowy conditions, and as soon as they run off the woman bites it in the middle of the street.

At least she turned out to have a good sense of humor about it all.
