The return of Do Life

The last time I wrote about Do Life, I was encouraging some of my students to check out Ben Davis and his video.  These days, I'm not so sure.

I went to the Philly 5k tonight because Suze was going, but the truth is I've lost a lot of interest in Ben Davis and his Do Life Movement.

Ben's achievement still stands: losing over 120 lbs. through running and racing, while overcoming a deep depression, is certainly laudable.  It was this story that galvanized a fanbase and began the Do Life Movement.  While I stress that Ben is a great guy, my issue is that he seems content to milk this one achievement for all it is worth.  He spent ages in college and then immediately thereafter boarded the gravy train, never learning the discipline and responsibility one acquires with a real job.  What Ben did is certainly inspiring, but nothing he is currently doing is inspiring.  Grandly announcing new plans, then failing to follow through, charging followers money for poorly thought-out challenges, gaining nearly 40 lbs. back while writing a book on weight-loss...  Most will cut him a break and say he is only human, but I say that if you want the job of fitness role model and source of inspiration for thousands, and earn money from it, you need to be held to a higher set of standards.  Frankly, and I know how harsh this sounds, but if I was as bad at my job as he is at his, I would have been fired long ago.

The last straw came a month ago when he decided to run the Lincoln Marathon.  The day before.  After having blown off training all spring.  Sorry, but nothing about a 6 hour marathon on no training is inspiring.  In my opinion, the marathon should be a celebration of months of hard work, not a decision born of peer-pressure the day before.  I've been told I tend to put the marathon on a pedestal, but so be it.

The 5k, incidentally, was certainly enjoyable.  We started at Eakins Oval, near the art museum, ran out and back along the Kelly Drive, and finished up the museum steps as per tradition.  It was a gorgeous evening, only my second time running since the Sugarloaf Marathon nearly three weeks ago, and I felt renewed doing circuits up and down the steps, watching the skyline rise and fall in a rhythmic procession of hearbeats and breaths, doing life, being my own inspiration.

Do Life

None other than Ben Davis himself has made it onto the cover of this month's Runner's World. You'll recall Mr. Davis as the founder of the Do Life Movement whom I've written about a few times before.

While at school today, I noticed a pair of students in my study hall reading Runner's World.  I approached them and told them all about Ben and Do Life and that they should check out his video when they get a chance.  Then came the kicker:

I remembered I was wearing my Do Life shirt at the time, so I went all Superman on them.

Do Life comes to Philly

Kathleen and I met up with the Davis clan in Philly last night for the third stop in the First Official Unofficial Do Life 5k Tour.  Over 40 people showed up at Eakins Oval next to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to share conversation, a few miles, and dinner.  Kathleen was star struck at seeing people in real life that she'd been following online for months.

Kathleen: (while running) Hey Ben!  If I catch up to you, will you marry me?
Ben: Yes! (speeds up)

We headed out en masse along Kelly Drive, one of Philly's favorite running spots, for a leisurely 5k run. I could still feel the soreness and general fatigue from the marathon only two days before, but the scenery, perfect weather and camaraderie more than made up for it.  And we wouldn't be proper Philly hosts if we didn't make the Davis boys run the art museum steps a lá Rocky Balboa, so that's how we finished out our run.

After running and taking pictures, we headed to the nearest Whole Foods where we all hung out eating and talking.

Thanks for stopping in Philly, guys, and good luck on the rest of the tour.

Movie Monday XIX

Ben Davis and crew are taking the show on the road this summer for the First Official Unofficial Do Life 5k Tour.  They're hitting 31 cities in 40 days and stopping somewhere in the middle to do an Ironman, all in the name of promoting the idea of doing life.  I'll be stopping by to see them in Philly a week from today.  Here's the promo video they made:

Movie Monday X

Speaking of Ben Davis and Do Life, this week's video comes to you from Devon Mills.  A few weeks ago, Ben made a stop in Seattle for another unofficial Do Life 5k.  Devon and her boyfriend Aaron attended, and together they put together the following video to document the day.

It's extremely well filmed and edited, capturing not the hectic, nervous energy of competition, but a group of people out to share a love of running.  When you run with Ben, it doesn't matter how fast or how slow you are, because it's about the camaraderie.

Do Life: Seattle from Devon Mills on Vimeo.

Speaking of Devon, she's been kind enough to link to me twice already on her blog.  She's currently training for the Seattle Rock n' Roll Half Marathon in June, and has joined the American Cancer Society's DetermiNation team to raise money to fight cancer.  She's pledged to raise $1,250, and so far is at $446, so stop by her donation page and help her out!

Movie Monday IX

We've all seen it before: the movie or tv show or Lifetime special in which a character experiences the death of a loved one and vows to live life to its fullest.  Maybe you are that person who lost someone close, or maybe you even had a near-death experience yourself.  The realization that life is short and precious is forced upon you, and you begin doing things in life that you assumed would only happen in the distant future.

I was always the type to think: why wait until someone dies?  Why not live life to its fullest now? That's what led to a three month trip around Australia in 2004, my first marathon in 2005 and skydiving in 2006.  When my mom passed away unexpectedly in 2006 at the age of 58, it seems an urgency was applied.  I began piling on the experiences at a furious clip while slowly coming to this life philosophy: "I long to fill my life with amazing experiences so that I may someday retire on the richness of my memories."  I drove across America and back by myself.  I raised thousands of dollars for charity and took part in a road rally from England to Mongolia.  I returned to the theater, landing the lead in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and trying Shakespeare for the first time.  I gave speeches at weddings.  I started a career in teaching.  I fell in love.  I ran more marathons.  In short, I did life, and continue to strive to do so.

Then I found Ben's video.  Primarily a weight loss journey in simplified form.  Insanely inspirational.  Running saved this guy's life and now allows him to inspire thousands of others around the world on a daily basis.  Watch this video and try to tell me it doesn't tap into some inner region of your soul, the place where anything is possible.  Watch this video and then think of the things you want to do before you die, but more importantly, why you haven't done them yet.  Watch this video and then do life.

Do Life

Went running in Central Park for the first time in my life yesterday, which gave me the opportunity to take this picture of myself looking half surprised/half crazed a lá R.P. McMurphy.

But let's back up a second.

I hate to start a blog with such long-winded exposition, but here goes: Several months ago a guy named Ben Davis posted a video on YouTube that chronicled his weight loss journey. The video went viral and garnered national attention, and Ben has used this attention to start a movement called "Do Life." Through his blog, his national media appearances, and his recent public speaking engagements, Ben has been inspiring countless others to get off the couch, lose weight, run, or whatever else it is they feel doing life entails.

From the Do Life Facebook page: "Do Life is a choice to take control of our lives. It is refusing to accept that life has to be ordinary or inconsequential. It is identifying the areas of our lives that need improvement. It is deciding to change..." The line about life not being inconsequential resonates with me, as it is an attitude I have had for years now. Needless to say, I was hooked on Ben and his Do Life movement.

Ben's blog: Ben Does Life

When Ben announced he was coming to New York and was hosting an unofficial Do Life 5k, I decided to come up to the city for it. I learned Ben is just as cool as he appears to be in his blog: a modest, inspirational, funny, down-to-earth guy. I learned the ladies really like him. And I learned that the second most popular question in the crowd yesterday, behind "what's your name?" was "what's the name of your blog?" I was probably the only one there without one.

I've long toyed with the idea of starting a running blog, and yesterday was the motivation I needed. I vowed to amass a collection of witty and intelligent posts on my life in running, and next time the Do Life train swings through town, I'll be ready with business cards.

Until then, I'll just keep running...

Ben, his dad (Pa), and me
